Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City as it is known today will be the veritable cliche -A shopper’s paradise. The principle feature of shopping throughout the administrative centre of Vietnam is it is tourist oriented, almost anything offered is intended for consumption with the hordes of visiting tourists. Having at least a fundamental knowledge of bargaining would serve you well here as there are numerous attractive items on display, from the usual touristy fare to elegant antiques and souvenirs.

The shops in Ho Chi Minh City or anywhere else in Vietnam are definately not being drab; they’re a riot of colour from extensive decorative attempt to the colorful household goods presented, the colour can be an enticing prospect for tourists. The streets from the city are lined with small outlets selling indigenously produced toys, souvenirs and clothing many of which have become cost-effective. Shopping in Vietnam can be a mixture of small vendors peddling locally made handicrafts to large western style department stores selling much more luxury fare.

The primary outdoor markets in Ho Chi Minh are Ben Thanh Market, the evening Market and the War surplus market. The largest of the lot is the Ben Thanh Market, which is instantly recognized by the big clock tower near the traffic circle. It’s a large old school outside market with a huge selection of narrow alleyways which may have store fronts. Because of regular patronage by tourists the marketplace has morphed in to a tourist attraction, many stalls now sell Vietnam t-shits and counterfeit branded jeans, caps and souvenirs.

A night Market is located almost near the Ben Thanh Companies are usually open after 5.00 pm. Forex also comes with a few food stalls where tourists can experience some local cuisine and try a nearby drink. However, one of the most interesting market of all is the War Surplus Market; forex is sometimes referred to as the American Market or “Cho Cu”. Many military items left over through the bloody American campaign up against the Viet Cong rebels, that ended with large losses of life for sides is seen here. American war gear like old military uniforms, GI helmets, US Marine t-shirts and old army knives can be obtained here. This could be an interesting destination to visit for collectors and Vietnam War veterans, the authenticity with the ware is not verified.
